This is all downstream of how you were raised. Part of boot camp is to teach the recruits who were raised in pigstys how to do basic hygiene. Otherwise everyone gets sick.

Same reason barracks cleanliness is very tough.

It takes years of repetition with some teenage boys to get them to do this stuff, and that's even with parents who are on top of this stuff. Eventually they get it, if you keep on them.

What you're seeing is an absolute breakdown in basic parenting and childrearing.

When my brother's first serious girlfriend broke up with him, he asked her why, and she actually was honest with him that one of the reasons was his home and car were always kinda trashed and it was a huge turnoff. Made him seem immature and lazy. To his credit, he really took that to heart and now he's a total clean freak. Keeps his space looking tight (and now he's engaged!).

It makes me wonder if more men would shift their habits if they knew how directly it was hurting their love life. I think most women never say anything, they just don't come back.

They don't want conflict so they'll just ghost instead of being upfront. She really did him a favor.

Med Gold out here helping the people.

I'd also add to the bad breath advice: whatever happened to having gum or a mint after every meal if you're unable to brush? So simple. Please, please do this so you don't assault people with the smell of coffee or garlic emanating from your mouth. These things are delicious but they don't smell good on our breath.

As part of making house smell less musty, I would recommend an essential oil diffuser. You can buy some for cheap and I bought some 200ml of lavander and coconut/vanilla essential oil to add to the machine.

Appartment smells much better, I had to put it because it smelled like old man, because an old man lived here before.

In the wardrobe, there are these wooden balls with smells that are quite cool.

One more, SHAVE YOURSELF. Ass, armpits, balls etc. whether you aesthetically want it or not is irrelevant, they contribute A LOT to smell. If you really WANT to be hairy some chest hair is fine but even then you'd probably be better off clean shaven.

Greener_Grass's avatar

And don't shave your face with the same implement you use to shave your balls. Different bacterial communities or something.

I don't shave below the neck and I never smell musty. I see how it could make it worse if you aren't following the other hygiene practices though. I always wash myself thoroughly when bathing.

I think a lot of guys' bad smell is because they don't thoroughly wash the "undercarriage" when showering.

Patrick Hearse's avatar

Idk how much hair you got in your ass crack but it can really mess with your hygiene back there no matter how thoroughly you wipe and rinse. Armpits too I think. Genitals are the least bad with that you can probably get away with unshaven if you wash thoroughly.

Gotta turn the shower head to blast mode when washing the whole crotchal to ass region.

Reading this, I'm really surprised that most needs to be said. Maybe it's because I'm older, but I'm not that old. The fuck is wrong with y'all?

Keeping your toilet clean and cleaning you dirty ass... Buy a fucking bidet. $30 on Amazon and you can hook it up yourself unless you're a complete retard. If you can't, you're a lost cause. Once you start using a bidet you'll feel like a walking biohazard after using toilet paper. I wouldn't think that washing your ass would need to be in an article about hygiene, but I guess I'm out of touch with you dirty bastards.

Dirty underwear... I wouldn't know, I don't wear underwear. Never really saw the point, but I'm in a hot climate and the less there is between me and the world the better I feel. Let it swing.

Showers...I suppose it just depends on your lifestyle but my day can't start without one, it's more of a ritual. When I was swinging hammers I had to take one at night as I was getting home sweaty as hell. I'll admit, I sometimes skip it at night these days.

Dry clothes... Its a dryer, like you said it takes 2 seconds to turn it on. I'll admit I have clothes, like linen or the few expensive pieces i have that I'll let air dry. That said, I've seen so many young guys with stains on their clothes. Know how to take care of your clothes. Get rid of stains before putting them in the dyer or they'll set. On the topic of clothes, I see so many younger guys who dress like a 5 year old. If you have a cartoon character or a video game reference on your shirt, no one will want to fuck you.

Floors... Either get a roomba that vacuums and mops or do it yourself. My kids and pets make keeping my place clean a chore, but it's got to be done.

Bad breath... I guess some people need to be told to brush their teeth. For everyone else, drink water throughout the day. It helps to keep your mouth hydrated and your breath fresh.

I'll add to this diatribe, pets. If you have dogs, bathe them. The smell of a dirty dog follows you, so does the smell of your shitty/pissy cat box.

I also wonder how much of this dirty ass/house thing can be chalked up to depression.

It's shocking how often I go to a single guy friend's house and he doesn't have a hand towel in his bathroom. I'm not drying my hands on your body towel that gets washed semi annually

This could use a part II about the most minimal yet effective "looksmaxxing" tips that don't take much time. Like how many guys' facial hair looks like gross pubes so they should probably be clean shaven. And find a haircut that suits them. And wear shirts with buttons when they go out in public. No flip flops unless you're at the pool.

I now picture med looks like notorious chad Patrick Bateman after learning how seriously he takes cleanliness with them triple showers

This is so true. I do not understand why people do this? Leaving urine in the toilet, the pillow observation is spot on the shit is rusty brown throw it away.

I feel like this is something that you shouldn’t have to write but I am glad that you did.

I was with you until 2-3 showers a day. 2nd shower iff you did hard work or athletics, sure. But not mandatory.
