Elon Musk recently quote tweeted this video and said “Yup”, validating the bearded Zoomer’s complaints. It’s pretty rare that I disagree with Musk, but generally, I think people who validate this kind of whining enable more of it. It isn’t clear what it is about Zoomers that the old woman was talking about, but I assume it has to do with being unmotivated and not doing well when it comes to dating. Here’s what was said in an exasperated tone.
“The economy sucks, you’re probably never gonna buy a house, your degree is useless and left you in mountains of debt, you’re nowhere near capable of providing for wife and kids and you can’t imagine yourself settling down with any of the women in your age bracket anyway because Disney princess programming and feminism has left them fundamentally unwifeable. You’ve grown up in a culture which has celebrated every other form of identity besides you and in exact proportion to how much they’re not you to the point that now schools and companies can hire based on that metric all the while being told you can’t complain or notice any of it because of how privileged you are and if you don’t know how privileged you are it’s because of your privilege even though you’re basically a debt slave with minimal hope of a financial and familiar future because your economy and culture is abandoning you so a lot of dudes just checked out and started like smoking weed and playing video games some of the other ones went to countries where they like white people and men like Thailand I guess and some of them are like you know what this is a good challenge none of it makes sense it’s all going to shit uh but fuck it I want a big house and if you come on my land I’m gonna shoot you with guns (!) I want a bunch of kids and a wife churning butter I’m gonna make it happen you fucks.”
Honestly, this is some of the most pathetic excuse-making I’ve ever heard. This line of reasoning is childish, entitled, weak and worst of all — extremely Reddit. What other group of people blame socioeconomic factors for their place in the world?
Some of these concerns are legitimate reasons for why your life may not be going well, but most of them aren’t. This is completely separate from whether or not the issues in themselves are problems that need to be fixed. They absolutely are. But in the spirit of being a man and not letting anything get in your way, figuring it out and triumphing over your challenges, this kind of bitching and whining needs to stop being tolerated. Does your boo-boo hurt? You want Mommy to kiss it and fix it for you?
I’m going to give this rant as fair of an assessment as I can.
“The economy sucks.”
Does it though? How much does it suck exactly? The birth rate was higher during the Great Depression than it is now. There were ~21.6 births per 1,000 people then, there’s ~17 births per 1,000 people now. The unemployment rate was 24.9% in 1933. The data on that is clear. I don’t exactly trust government data today, but the unemployment rate is definitely nowhere near 25%. It’s probably < 5%. DEI mandates aside, which is slowly starting to loosen, you can still get a job even if it isn’t high-status or high-paying. You can get 2. You can get 3. So there goes that excuse.
“You’re probably never gonna buy a house.”
So what? Widespread homeownership is a relatively new phenomenon. The GI Bill after WWII offered loan guarantees that made homeownership more affordable. What did people do before then? Humans have been around for over 300,000 years. Homeownership has been normalized for roughly 0.03% of the time humans have existed. They found a way to get through life without a mortgage. You don’t need to own a house in order to date and start a family. It’s not required to date, it’s ideal for starting a family but it also isn’t a requirement. Millions of people rent and are doing just fine. Next excuse.
“Your degree is useless and left you in mountains of debt"
I will extend some sympathy here, being in student loan debt, or any kind of debt, sucks. And yes, we’re going through a period where the value of a university degree is becoming more and more questionable especially when DEI mandates are in place, despite the tide starting to turn. The total amount of debt per month can indeed be crippling.
